Match Story: Brian & Zola - Finding a New Battle Buddy

A Lifetime of Service

Colonel (Ret.) Brian Gebo spent nearly 25 years in the U.S. Air Force as a Special Warfare Officer – Combat Rescue. As a Combat Rescue Officer, Brian led missions around the world, deploying to Afghanistan, Pakistan, and beyond. His role was clear: to save lives in the most dangerous environments.

But when he retired, Brian faced a different kind of battle.

“I found myself alone with my thoughts. My mind wouldn’t stop racing. I missed my teammates more than anything,” he shared.

Meeting Zola

Brian knew a service dog could make the difference. He began searching, but what he wanted was rare — a Great Dane trained for stability and support. That search led him to Northeast Canine.

From the first conversation, Brian said he felt seen and understood. Our process is designed to build trust and match each recipient with the right dog.

Then came Zola.

“When she showed up, it was like we had known each other forever. She’s gorgeous, steady, and she’s my new battle buddy.”

Zola’s calm presence immediately anchored Brian. Together, they began training in his home, in his routines, and within his family’s daily life.

A New Kind of Presence

For Brian, Zola isn’t just about stability. She helps him stay present, keeping intrusive thoughts at bay and giving him focus.

The impact extends to his family, too.

“My kids see me more in the moment now. Instead of me sitting alone, we go outside and play catch together with Zola. My wife has peace of mind knowing I’m safe and grounded when she’s at work. She sees the difference too.”

From Pup to Hero

Zola represents the bond and camaraderie Brian thought he had left behind. Now, she’s restoring independence, presence, and joy to his daily life.

“You’re not just donating money to a cause. You’re giving veterans like me a teammate who changes our lives completely.”

We are deeply grateful to Nancy K for supporting Zola’s journey. Because of you, Zola was able to train, grow, and ultimately change a life.

It takes 18 months and nearly $30,000 to prepare a Great Dane like Zola for service — but our veterans and first responders never pay a cent. They’ve already paid with their service.
