Is Northeast Canine a Nonprofit?
Yes, Northeast Canine is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, located in Southern New Hampshire. We are dedicated to breeding, training, and pairing Great Danes as service dogs, primarily for veterans and first responders, to enhance mobility and provide companionship.
What is NEC's approach to breeding Great Danes for service roles?
NEC's breeding program is meticulously planned, focusing on Great Danes known for their even temperament, intelligence, and physical suitability for mobility assistance. We carefully select based on health, structure, and lineage, preferring European-style Danes for their robust build.
How does NEC Train their Danes for service?
NEC runs a specialized training program for our Danes, focusing on mobility assistance and specific tasks like fall prevention and aiding visual impairments. We also train behaviors for creating space in public and reducing social anxiety for handlers.
How do you ensure a dog is ready for service?
Before graduating, each dog is thoroughly assessed and certified to meet our high standards for service work, including ADI standard public access tests.
How does NEC match dogs with handlers?
We profile potential handlers based on personality, lifestyle, and specific needs to find the right dog for each individual. A structured bonding process, including a critical week long pairing period with an NEC trainer, is facilitated to ensure a deep connection between the dog and handler.
What support does NEC provide after graduation?
Graduation is just the beginning. NEC provides ongoing assistance and follow-up training to ensure a smooth transition into daily life and adapts to any evolving needs over time.
How do I apply for a Service Dog from NEC?
Please fill out our
NEC Service Dog Application form. Keep in mind that we are a small organization, and the demand for service dogs often exceeds our capacity. We do our very best to keep all of our applicants informed during the process. NEC does give priority to Veterans and first responders.
Does NEC train pet dogs or personal dogs as service dogs?
Currently, we only train our own dogs as service dogs. For pet dog training, please contact Maggie Hackett of
The Canine Classroom or Devin DiBerto of
Devin's Pack.

Who is a Great Dane service dog best for?
Individuals with Mobility Challenges: Great Danes are large, strong dogs, making them ideal for providing physical support to individuals who struggle with balance or mobility. Their size and stature allow them to act as a stable brace for those who need assistance with walking or standing.
Veterans and First Responders: Northeast Canine prioritizes veterans and first responders, many of whom may have physical injuries or conditions that affect their mobility, as well as mental health challenges like PTSD. Great Danes are known for their calming presence, which can be particularly beneficial for individuals dealing with trauma-related conditions.
Those Seeking Companionship: Beyond physical support, Great Danes are known for their gentle and affectionate nature, making them excellent companions. They can provide emotional and psychological benefits, helping to alleviate feelings of loneliness or anxiety.
Individuals Able to Handle a Large Dog: Due to their size, Great Danes require handlers who are capable of managing a large breed. This includes being physically able to accommodate the dog in their living environment and handle them in public spaces.
People Committed to Ongoing Training and Care: Owning a service dog is a long-term commitment that involves ongoing training, care, and interaction. Prospective handlers should be prepared for the responsibilities associated with maintaining the health, well-being, and training of a Great Dane service dog.
Please Note: While Great Danes are versatile and capable service dogs, they may not be suitable for all types of disabilities or living situations. Northeast Canine conducts a thorough evaluation process to ensure that a Great Dane service dog is a good fit for each applicant's specific needs and lifestyle.
